Sants Montjuic Guide

Sants-Montjuïc is Barcelona’s biggest district and also its greenest. It encompasses the whole area between the town of l’Hospitalet de Llobregat and the Eixample and runs down to the commercial port and the sea.

The landmark feature of this area is the mountain of Montjuïc, where sport, culture and history can be enjoyed from a position that offers some of the best views of the city and coastline all the way up to the Costa Brava.

The many attractions of this iconic hill include the Olympic Stadium, the Jewish cemetery, the famous castle and the Telefèric de Montjuïc (cable car), which takes you to the summit in comfort and offers beautiful views along the way. The classic Aeri del Port de Barcelona also leaves from here, joining the mountain to Barceloneta via the World Trade Centre and providing another wonderful opportunity to see the city from the air.

Poble Sec is one of the most charismatic barrios in Barcelona. Originally an industrial estate, the area now flanks Avinguda Paral·lel with its entertainment and leisure hot spots including world-class restaurants, theatres, cabarets and live-music cafes that are open until dawn.

The Universal Exhibition in 1929 represented a turning point in the city planning of Plaça de Espanya with the completion of Poble Espanyolthe Olympic Stadium and the Font Màgica where crowds gather to see the fantastic music, light and water show.

The Fira de Barcelona (Barcelona’s Trade Fair Centre) is also around Plaça de Espanya and is one of the largest and most important convention centres in Europe. It has been expanded along the key transport artery of Gran Via to include the Fira 2.

The barrios of Sants and Bordeta-Hostafrancs are largely residential, with a mixture of a recent industrial working class past with the most avant-garde gardens and projects from the 1980s. Citizens in this district are proud of their barrios with its many social centres. The area is also home to the new Ciutat de la Justícia (Justice Hall) built in 2008 and the Gran Via 2 shopping centre.

The Estació Central Barcelona-Sants is one of Barcelona’s most important communications hubs, with extensive national and international train links, underground and bus services all available. Next to the station is the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial, with its open spaces, picturesque lake and a striking dragon sculpture. It’s the ideal place to wait for a train.
