A jewel of Modernism at your fingertips

After several years of renovation, an intensive interior design work and a complete refurbishing of its architectural elements, the Casa Burés rises from its ashes and presents itself to the public in its maximum splendor, now as a residential building. One of the most representative modernist buildings of the Eixample and the model of ‘rental house’ of the time, Casa Burés is one of the most valuable modernist jewels from the city of Barcelona.

Built between 1900 and 1905 and located in the chamfer of Ausiàs March and Girona streets, Casa Burés owes its name to its first owner, Francesc Burés, who ordered its building in order to house the headquarters of its textile company, one of the most profitable of the moment, on the ground floor. The property was designed, as the time demanded, for the owners to reside on the main floor, the most significant of the entire building, and to allocate the rest of the floors for tenants. Burés, son of the founder of the prosperous cotton company, commissioned Francesc Berenguer i Mestres, a Gaudí’s colleague, to project his home in one of the most emblematic chamfers of the city, and so was done. With more than 7,000sq m, six floors, twelve rental apartments and one of the first elevators in Barcelona, Casa Burés rose as one of the most ambitious modernist projects of the early twentieth century.

The building’s style is purely modernist and, as such, it has neo-Gothic and Germanic influences. From the facade, it is worth mentioning the use of the stone and the treatment of the parameters; unpolished ashlars, irons and curved decoration on balconies and sculptural ornaments, as well as on the main railing of the main and the two grandstands. However, its greatest treasures are found inside. The entrance hall and the entrance of vehicles is decorated with small capitals and animal representations. The most emblematic is that of a brown bear hugging a brass lamp located at the start of the main staircase. A skylight and a stained glass window conclude the space in a symphony of stone, glass, mosaic and iron.

On the main floor the decoration is sublime, and it brings together extraordinary elements, as a result of the work of the best craftsmen of the time. Being the owner’s place of living, the initial architects and decorators designed the entire structure for him, as well as its furniture and finishes. Thus, some dependencies with its original furnishing are still preserved: mosaic floors and marquetry, work by Pau Roig and Gaspar Homar, sculptural panels with representations of sports practiced by the bourgeoisie, by the hand of Joan Carreras, and many others. The ceiling is worked in plaster with borders and floral and natural reliefs. The decorations on the upper floors are much simpler, and they essentially highlight for their ceramic decorations and hydraulic flooring.

As time went by, most modernist buildings turned into hotels, museums and headquarters of the world’s leading organizations. Casa Burés is the only building that has been kept as a residential place and it opens to the public of the city. Listed with level B of protection of Local Culture Interest since 1979, this estate has been one of the main treasures of Barcelona for over a hundred years and, as such, it is essential to keep and preserve its structure. A true challenge. Therefore, the refurbishing process of Casa Burés goes far beyond maintaining the building and its cataloged decorative elements, it is also meant to support those values that Modernism carried had as a creed: light, space, habitability, quality and maximum comfort.

Juan Trias de Bes, the architect who heads the rehabilitation project, joining forces with the interior design team of the Vilablanch studio, specialists in restoration of high heritage value homes, have developed a project that preserves the maximum of original elements of the building and, at the same time, they have equipped it with all the comforts and the most current design. The oldest items have been restored, more current ones have been replaced and adapted, and the rest of the pieces have come to life.

The refurbishing of Casa Burés has already been awarded and competes in the most prestigious competitions in the sector all over the world: in Madrid, Milan and London. The interior design project of one of the apartments has been a finalist in the current edition of the World Interiors News Awards, one of the most recognized in the world. Now, Casa Burés is presented to the public with the possibility of acquiring some of the most coveted homes in the city, something that happens very rarely. A unique opportunity.

At present, and after the renovation, new communal areas have been added to the estate. The basement, which was the textile warehouse of the Burés factory, has been changed into a large space which is perfect for enjoying leisure time: indoor pool, gym, wine cellar, kitchen and events room with dining area for family and friends gatherings, work, leisure and relaxation areas. The space houses a laundry space and a storage room for each apartment. In addition, the rooftop of the building has been conditioned as a chill-out area, with resting areas and an outdoor pool.
