Casa Amatller, an architectural jewel

On March 1898, the industrial chocolate maker Antoni Amatller Costa bought a building on the number 101 in Paseo de Gracia, Barcelona. This building is currently considered to be one of the architectural jewels of the Catalan capital – it was built in 1875 under the direction of Antoni Robert, following the ‘pla Cerdà’ guidelines, although it was the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch who reshaped it completely.

Puig i Cadafalch, considered an icon of the Catalan modernism, was commissioned by Amatller to reshape the building in 1898. The architect from Mataró made a radical transformation: he demolished the façade and started from scratch, he also built a photographic study on the terrace, restructured the lower floor, redistributed and redecorated the principal floor, included an electric lift and refurbished the kitchen and bathrooms in every floor. He basically brought modernism in all its aspects to ‘casa Amatller’

The limitations of the space and the delicacy of some of the objects exhibited there make the number of people that can visit the building at a time to be very reduced ─ 12 people. If you are planning to visit, book your tickets in advance – you can buy the tickets online or at the ticket desk – because visiting it on the same day is basically impossible. It is good to know as well that you cannot visit ‘casa Amatller’ with stiletto heels and bags, umbrellas or any kind of object that might damage the decoration, all these objects must be left in the cloakroom.
