Nou Barris is found in the north of Barcelona in the shadow of the Collserola hills. This is one of the more architecturally modern and diverse areas due to the fact that is has grown very quickly and building has been in response to individual situations rather than an ongoing plan.
Like many towns on the outskirts of Barcelona, this area is a commuter neighbourhood and local facilities have been in short supply. However, around the Olympic Games in 1992 the area benefited from significant investment in new infrastructure, facilities and green areas.
Nou Barris has 13 barrios, the most of any city district. In the upper levels these include Cuitat Meridiana, Torre Baró and Vallbona where the main roads and rail links form artificial borders. Most people live in the other barrios, including Prosperitat, Porta, La Guineueta, Turó de la Peira, Roquetes i Verdun and Can Peguera.
Homes here represent great value in Barcelona, and despite lower prices communications are good thanks to the Ronda de Dalt and Ronda Litoral, the main routes in, out and around the city. Canyelles is also home to the Parc de Serra i Martí, with its Magic Fountain – not the one in Montjuïc – offering a popular music, light and water show.
Good communications make reaching larger retail areas and shopping centres easy, and there are many smaller shops and stores to satisfy daily local needs. La Prosperitat offers plenty of commercial activity around streets such as Via Júlia, Joaquim Valls and Font de Canyelles. The social and commercial focus of the area is Carrer de Pablo Iglesias with its wide pavements.
