Ahead of his time, Idelfons Cercà sought to give to Barcelona wide spacious areas, so the light and fresh air could easily flow. His ‘Pla Cerdà’ project was looking to promote a balance in the people’s lifestyle. Cerdà designed 20m-width streets and a squared-block neighbourhood. Each block (illa in Catalan) kept the central its area without building, instead a communal green space was placed. Following the same concept, markets, parks and other city services where equally divided. Even though the project eventually did not fully follow Cerdà’s instructions, the essence strongly remained in the urban lay out.
