Sala Beckett is not a simple a theatre hall, it is much more than that. Besides contemporary European theatrical projections, it is also a place where actors can train and study ─ one of those places where experimentation is essential. After 25 years functioning, Sala Beckett just moved its headquarters to Gràcia, in the Poblenou area.
This new space was created by Flores & Prats Arquitectos. They refurbished the whole place and re-designed the old and abandoned ‘Cooperativa Paz y Justicia’ building. They found a place in ruins of extraordinary proportions that kept its authentic decoration in walls, ceilings and floors and made the most of it.
The new Sala Beckett is a renovated space that preserves most of the original tiled flooring, the wood carpentry with stained glass, the cornices and the rosettes in the rooms. The design of the new building makes possible the fact that the bright rooms have retained their unfinished nature. The worn-out walls remind us of the old social club, original lamps have been installed, adding as well unusual colours, and wooden benches and landings.
The 2.923sq m building has now two exhibition spaces, reading and writing rooms, a dramaturgy room and a bar/restaurant for the neighbourhood. For its renovation they have had the support of the ‘Departamento de Cultura de la Generalitat de Cataluña’. As Flores & Prat Arquitectos commented to HIC et NUNC, one of the challenges they faced was to ‘move the team in Sala Beckett to a new location without losing the magic that they have been creating for so many years’.
