Since September, Catalunya-La Pedrera’s foundation is paying tribute to the Basque sculptor Oteiza with an exposition that will be a journey through his work (from the firsts pieces to its latest). A dance show by ‘Kukai’ company will complement this exhibition, ‘La desocupación del espacio’. OTEHITZARI BIRAKA (site-specific) will be performed on November 24th at 20:00.
A special adaptation of a tour that will finish at ‘La Pedrera’ has been created in order to “create a dialogue between the building and the work of the Basque sculptor”. This choreography has been created by Jon Maya Sein and is directed by Mireia Gabilondo. It will be an itinerant show that will be moving around different spaces in which most of the time the public will be standing.
The Foundation claims that it “gives a tour throughout all the stages of the work of this sculptor. It goes from the archaic forms of its firsts pieces to the last series, stopping over its central axis, ‘Propósito Experimental’. It also wants to disclose several sides of its life, politic and creative, that go from architecture or poetry to pedagogy and cultural upheaval.
Jorge Oteiza was born in Orio (Guipúzcoa) in 1908 and died in San Sebastián in 2003. He is one of the referents of the second half of the XX century. There is only one of his sculptures in Barcelona situated in front of MACBA in ‘Plaça dels Àngels’. The sculpture ‘La ola’, inaugurated in 1998, is made of aluminium and polyurethane paint and weighs 3.500 kilograms. In this piece, the sculptor worked on his idea of dialogue between space and void, trying to fill in the gap in ‘Plaça dels Àngels’, the museum and the old convent.
