The beginnings of the restoration in the enclosure go back to the end of the XIX century when, because of the growth of the city and the advances in medicine, the space of the hospital, which was in the building at that moment, was suddenly too small. The person in charge of shaping these facilities was Lluís Domènec i Montaner. The works were completed in 1930.
The aim of the architect was to recover the patrimonial and artistic value of the Modernist enclosure, an objective that he achieved. The hospital closed its doors in 2009 and is now a sustainability, health and education knowledge centre ─ It is a cultural program that has become a referent within European Modernism.
If you decide to visit Sant Pau, you will have the opportunity to travel through the history of medicine in Barcelona and see one of the oldest sanitary institutions in Europe. There you will find display cabinets with medical equipment, architectonic elements, informative panels, miniatures and screens that are part of this institution’s collection.
The facilities are access free, so everyone can get to see this piece of history, although there are some multi-purpose rooms that can be rented to host any kind of event.
