Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the history of this monastery goes back to 1326, when Queen Elisenda de Montcada founded this convent for all the nuns from ‘good’ families that wanted to retreat spiritually. It is a spectacular building and one of the purest examples of gothic architecture in Catalonia.
The monastery is laid out in three floors surrounding a square with trees and fountains. The style of architecture tries to convey peace, tranquillity and serenity. What’s more, the fact that it is located at the foot of Sant Pere Màrtir mountain, makes those there connect immediately with nature, so the retreat is assured.
At present, the monastery is a museum. There are exhibitions, guided visits and all kind of activities, such a medieval workshop in the garden so people can learn about natural medicine and local remedies. In addition, some of the spaces in the building can be rented for private events.
As a curiosity, some rooms in the convent preserve manuscripts and sculptures from the XIV to the XVII century, as well as ceramics, ethnology, pieces of metalwork and furniture typical of these periods that will surprise you.
