If you have been to Barcelona, you probably already know that ‘El Born’ is one of the most magical areas in the city. Its stone buildings of medieval origin, the cobbled alleys, the balconies and hidden small squares are just examples of its beauty and charm. Getting lost on the streets allows you to discover marvellous places such as dozens of tapas restaurants, local shops or museums. Nevertheless, what really stands out in the neighbourhood is its spectacular cathedral: ‘Santa María del Mar’ basilica, the best example of Catalan architecture.
This gothic-style basilica, known as ‘Catedral de la Ribera’, was built in the Middle Ages, on the XIV century. Its construction started on March 25th 1329, as the tombstones in ‘Fossar de les Moreres’ say, and it was finished on November 3rd 1383. The “authors” of this project were Berenguer de Montagut and Ramon Despuig, authentic masters of architecture. The basilica, built just in 55 years, is a unique sample of the Catalan gothic style, characterized by its structure in three aisles, its high columns and its large and beautiful stained-glass windows.
Through the centuries, the basilica has suffered several destructions and reconstructions. One of the most important was the one on July 19th 1936, during the civil war in Spain, when an incident destroyed completely its baroque altar and all the stored files and documents. Thanks to all the restorations and reconstructions that have been made it is still possible to admire its beauty.
