Guide of Sitges

Sitges is located in the comarca (county) of Garraf, just southwest of Barcelona, with which it has great connections. It is a quiet, Mediterranean-style town known for its beaches and its beachfront promenade lined with mansions. It has more than 28,000 inhabitants in 44 km2, 30% of whom are from abroad.

Sitges has a warm climate thanks to its geographic location on the shores of the Mediterranean. It is also surrounded by the Garrif massif, which protects it and allows outdoor activities to be held there virtually year-round. Its location could not be better, as it is just a few minutes from the city of Barcelona (38 km) and El Prat International Airport (25 km), in addition to having a great bus and train network.

Sitges often figures prominently in major international and national events, such as the Sitges International Fantasy Film Festival, the Sitges Carnaval celebrations, prominent art exhibitions held by the Maricel Museum or the Cau Ferrat Museum and other events. It is a popular tourist site, where simply strolling along its beautiful beachfront promenade is an experience in itself, as it is surrounded by beautiful mansions on one side, some of them built by sugar-cane barons who made their fortune in the Indies, and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. All told, Sitges has 4 km of beaches along with an original old quarter whose roads are bustling with shops, restaurants, bars and discos. It has fantastic tourist infrastructures with facilities and three sports marinas.

Sitges has different neighbourhoods, some of them quite modern and others with a long history. On the far west side of the town, near the beachfront promenade, is Terramar, a neighbourhood which is the home to the Catalan modernism-style mansions that heralded the most glorious period in Sitges, where the entire Catalan bourgeoisie clamoured to live.
Today in Terramar you can also find homes in different architectural styles, with a mix of Catalan modernism from the 1920s and homes with avant-garde designs. Between this neighbourhood and the centre of Sitges is Vinyet, where large houses, Mediterranean-style homes and flats have been built. It is a very comfortable neighbourhood since it’s just a few minutes from the centre. Its main features include a beautiful church that is quite popular with the locals. The centre of Sitges is divided into the older part and the newer part. The old quarter boasts narrow, picturesque streets where old artists like Santiago Rusiñol used to live. One of the most famous residential districts is Aiguadolç, which is perched above the Port of Sitges and was built in the 1980s. Most of the homes there have views of the sea since the district is built atop a low mountain, conferring spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and Sitges.

Another neighbourhood quite similar to Aiguadolç is Levantina, although it was built more recently. It is also located on a mountain and boasts luxurious homes with infinity pools and spectacular scenic views. In fact, this is the neighbourhood with the best lookout point over all of Sitges. Behind Levantina is the neighbourhood of Quint Mar, which is the home to numerous entertainment and sports companies, as well as homes. A small valley just above the centre of Sitges is the neighbourhood of Vall Pineda, where the most spectacular homes are located. Plus, this area has two tennis clubs and a huge equestrian centre. As a municipality, Sitges has three other housing estates which tend to be associated with Castelldefels because of their proximity to it, namely Les Botigues de SitgesGarraf Dos and Rat-Penat.

As you can see, this coastal town offers a wide variety of activities for all its residents, and it is a place where they all live together respecting the values that have perennially characterised the residents of and visitors to this community: tolerance and an open mind. It is a place of peaceful coexistence where diversity is multiplying and enriching.
