THE EMOTIONS WHEN BUYING A HOUSE

Neuroscientist Susana Martínez, head of Barrow Neurological Institute (Phoenix, USA), claims that ‘decisions based strictly in rational factors are a minority’.

There are many decisions we make unconsciously − we will already have done something before we can stop and think. Nevertheless, when looking for a home, especially if we are thinking about buying, we take into account other factors.

What is the first thing we look for when buying a house?

We take into account if the place has good lighting, the number of rooms, the location, if it has terrace or balcony, swimming pool… but we also take a look at the finishing touches, community expenses and the neighbourhood. These are some of the things we consider before deciding over a new home, but it is also common to ponder upon what we feel when we go through the door, that is to say, if we are comfortable and if we imagine ourselves there in the future.

Emotions have a lot to do when choosing our new home. The first impression matters, and as Oscar Wild once said ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression’. When we are looking for a place to live and create a future, this first impression is very important. If you enter a house and you imagine yourself starting a family and making memories with them, it all indicates that the beginning of a new stage for you is among those walls.

Not all houses trigger the same emotions. ¿What does that corner suggests to you? ¿What do you feel like doing? Words like ‘calm’, ‘relax’ or ‘quiet’ must have come to your mind. In one of the most beautiful parts of the city, ‘barrio Gótico’, we offer a refurbished development of apartments. You can start picturing yourself, completely relaxed, by the window enjoying the amazing views to Barcelona’s Cathedral.

Do some research about the surroundings. As we said before, the moment of the purchase has to do with our circumstances and necessities at the time − factors such as if your workplace or a school for your kids is nearby will influence you. It all depends on the importance you give to those factors. Just a little piece of advice: visit the neighbourhood a few times before making a decision and at different times of the day.

Read the contract before getting carried away. Buying a home is one of the most important decisions in your life, make sure you review the conditions you will be under before prioritizing the emotions.
