Unique spaces: Christo and Jean-Claude work

Christo and Jean-Claude’s job is to create large works of art making the most of nature. Its enormous pieces surround isles, wrap trees and secondary roads. The artists exploit the structures that the city offers them as well ─ they have even wrapped historic buildings with kilometres of fabric, or placed thousands of umbrellas in large areas.

To design and create these constructions they need decades. In order to finish every single project, they need to travel until they find the perfect location, fill in and complete numerous legal processes, and gather enough money using just their own means. They do not accept to be sponsored, and to get money they sell their works to museums, private collectors and galleries.

One of their last projects took 16 days to build and was on Iseo lake, between Brescia and Bergamo (Italy), on the summer of 2016. On this spot, they installed 100.000sq m of shiny yellow fabric over 220.000 polyethylene cubes. This unusual 3-kilometre yellow way allowed people to walk on water, from Sulzano to Isola mount, and from there to San Paolo island. The journey through this way offered spectacular views of nature from an unexpected perspective.

After 32 years of efforts, in Berower park, on the Norteast of Basilea (Germany), they got to cover the branches of 178 trees with 55.000sq m of fabric. The shadows and the new shapes of the trees moving along with the wind, transformed the space in a true wonder worth seeing.

Surrounded Islands is another of their most memorable constructions. For it to be so special, they surrounded eleven islands with recycled floating pink fabric which adapted to the shape of each of the pieces of land. The green colour of the tropical vegetation on Biscayne bay, in Miami, contrasted with the water and the shore, creating an extraordinarily unique landscape.

They are currently working on their first permanent piece: a large mastaba in Abu Dhabi. It will be the biggest sculpture in the world and it’ll be made with 410.000 multicoloured barrels. Christo and Jean-Claude’s creations are always completely open to the public, and with each of them they want to highlight the unique and transitory aspect of everything which surrounds us.
