Xavier Corberó – The house as a poem

Xavier Corberó i Olivella’s house – Catalan sculptor – is a labyrinth, something like a poem which he has been shaping since 1968. The property, in Esplugas de Llobregat, is a 4.500sq m hypnotic place. Its 9 buildings intertwine by means of more than 10 courtyards, more than 300 arches, glass doors and wood, a complex web of studios, living rooms, bedrooms, wonderful gardens, a subterranean studio and art galleries in which he exhibits his own works – always made in marble and basalt.

His house is not just a simple space to live in, the interiors build a universal meaning: “I like the feeling that you get when you think that things have been always there”, said to The Wall Street Journal about a piece that was photographed by Salva López – Catalan photographer.

Xavier’s house is completely personal and unique. Even when he is 81-years-old, he keeps working to shape what he sees in his imagination. He invited recently invited director Albert Moya to his post-industrial home to explain in detail how he conceives the different spaces in his house: “what interests me is that the result is poetry as I think that poetry is the mother of everything. For me, a house is like an agenda. Here every object has a personal history. I bought the last beautiful spot in Esplugas and I thought that if I hid the ugly parts, it could look pretty. And since 1968 I have been building nonstop. Everything I have ever made is here”, he confessed.

The real space is a mental space as well, he aims to make us see almost everything from a single spot, to give a feeling of continuity. The rooms in Xavier Corberó’s house have no function, almost as if they had no specific purpose: everything is unique and different. For example, the courtyard has octagonal windows that function as a kaleidoscope, projecting reflections in different rooms. As Moya explained in a video: “When the scale is right, the music sounds perfectly. What I try to do does not come from reason, it comes from life. Reason makes the construction possible and makes everything stand together, but the rest are aesthetic, ethnic and divine motivations. I try to do things that I have imagined, things that I have never done before and I’d like to see”.

Luminosity and blank white walls are some of the characteristics that this luxury house share with Xavier’s house. If you are interested on it, do not hesitate to contact Atipika Barcelona.
