Guide Badalona - Montgat

Badalona is located just 10 km from Barcelona on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, north of the mouth of the Besòs river and southwest of the Sierra de la Marina. With origins dating back over 2,000 years, it is one of the oldest and most historic cities in Catalonia.

The Roman city of Baetulo founded the city in the year 100 B.C. and today we can find the archaeological remains in the Badalona Museum, with 3,400m2 of Cultural Goods of National Interest and historical heritage of Spain. Among its highlights are the Roman baths located underground, but there are also other spaces such as: Casa dels Dofins, Can Miravitges, Jardí de Quint Licini, Conducte d'Aigües, and Turó d'en Boscà.

Another important point in the city is the Monastery of Sant Jeroni de la Murtra, founded in 1416, where Christopher Columbus was received by the Catholic Monarchs upon his return from the first voyage to America in 1493. It is located in the Sierra de la Marina, offering panoramic views of both Badalona and Barcelona.

Properties in Badalona

Since the 19th century, and specifically since the inauguration of the railway between Barcelona and Mataró in 1848, Badalona began to grow demographically and industrialize. Nowadays, Badalona is in the midst of a process of major urban changes that will represent one of the challenges of the 21st century.

It is worth noting that Badalona's main attraction is its beaches and the seafront promenade. We can find the famous Pont del Petroli, built in the 1960s, which extends about 250 meters into the sea, reaching about 6 meters above it, from where we can enjoy magnificent views of the city. Next to the bridge, we find a statue of Anís del Mono and the Anís factory, which at times fills the nearby atmosphere with a soft and sweet aroma.

With good connections to Barcelona by bus, Renfe, or metro, and just 20 minutes from the airport, Badalona is a great choice for those who want to be close to the Catalan capital and by the beach at more affordable prices.

To the southwest of Badalona, we find Sant Adrià del Besòs, originating from the year 1012. Due to its role as a transit area to the city of Barcelona, the city was destroyed twice: in 1114 by Muslim troops and in 1697 by French troops. During the industrial revolution, industries began to be established, and currently, it is home to important companies in the sector, including 3 thermal power plants. Among them stands out the Sant Adrià thermal power plant, the first one built in the area in 1913, with its unmistakable three chimneys that ceased operation in 2011 with the aim of promoting the city's historical memory. Nowadays, they are in the process of being declared a Cultural Heritage of Local Interest.

To the northeast of Badalona and following the coast is the town of Montgat. Various excavations carried out over the years have confirmed the existence of an Iberian settlement on the top of Turó de Montgat, dated approximately to the year 3500 BC. In addition to having several charming spots, the town has privileged beaches to enjoy. Sant Adrià del Besòs, Montgat, Tiana, or Calella are just some of the most relevant areas both for their proximity and good connection to Barcelona, as well as their own economic, cultural, and geographical attractions.
