Sant Martí guide

The manors and lordly towers concentrated agricultural activity and land exploitation in this district. Currently, it is one of the most modern neighborhoods in Barcelona, due to the technological district of 22@ and the new buildings of Diagonal Mar and the Front Marítim del Poblenou.

By the end of the 19th century, the neighborhood had become an industrial and working-class settlement, which was further urbanistically consolidated with the installation of factories and housing.

The district of Sant Martí hosts in the same territory the past and future of Barcelona. This combination is reflected especially in the transformation of the former industrial Poblenou into residences for athletes during the 1992 Olympics and known as La Villa Olímpica, with its twin towers dominating the Barcelona coastline (Hotel Arts and Torre Mapfre), and in the new technological district 22@. This project involves mixing economic activity (companies and offices) with educational (university campuses) and residential (redevelopment of streets and construction of housing). An initiative baptized as a compact city that aims to be the benchmark of the future Barcelona, with its most iconic and well-known addition being the Torre Agbar.

The library of Universitat Pompeu Fabra occupies the unique building of the Water Tower, which formerly supplied water to the fountain in the neighboring Parc de la Ciutadella. One of the latest improvements in the neighborhood is the presence of the tram.

Properties in Sant Martí

Other projects that are changing the appearance of the district include the extension of Diagonal Avenue to the Fòrum area, the remodeling of Glòries Square, which also features a large shopping center, the partial covering of the Gran Vía, and the urbanization of the coastline, from the Olympic Village to Besòs. All these changes are reflected in ten neighborhoods. Above Gran Vía are Camp de l'Arpa del Clot and El Clot, as well as La Verneda and La Pau, and Sant Martí de Provençals.

El Clot is one of the oldest nuclei of Sant Martí. It has gradually lost its industrial character as old factories and workshops have moved or disappeared. This has made it possible to recover some large spaces for public use, such as El Clot Park.

The neighborhood of Diagonal Mar, located at the beginning of Diagonal Avenue and leading to the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the newest neighborhoods in the Ciudad Condal (it is still in the process of formation and consolidation). It was designed and created as part of the urban plan for the celebration of the Fòrum Universal de les Cultures of Barcelona in 2004. It stands out for the quality of its urban developments, with easy access to the sea and an American concept of community: communal pools, gyms, and social clubs. Diagonal Mar is one of the neighborhoods in Barcelona, along with the Eixample, that has the highest concentration of luxury hotels in the city.
