The result was a bedroom community that, like most peripheral areas of large cities, had serious deficiencies in infrastructure and services to make the place more habitable. It is the district with the most neighborhoods. The latest one recognized is Can Peguera, which becomes neighborhood number 13.
The upper end of the district is occupied by the neighborhoods of Ciutat Meridiana, Torre Baró, and Vallbona, with urban structures heavily marked by the mountainous terrain and large artificial barriers (highways and train tracks). The rest of the neighborhoods are the ones with the highest population, such as Prosperitat, Porta, La Guineueta, Turó de la Peira, Roquetes, and Verdun.
The improvements made for the 1992 Olympic Games were significant, not only for the communication possibilities thanks to the new ring roads, but also for the new facilities and the recovery of green areas.
