A jewel of Modernism at your fingertips

14-02-2020 Lifestyle

After years of rehabilitation and meticulous interior design work, Casa Burés resurfaces with more splendor than ever. This emblematic modernist building in the Eixample, one of the best examples of the 'rental house' model of the time, is considered a true heritage gem of Barcelona.

Built between 1900 and 1905 on the corner of Ausiàs March and Girona streets, the property owes its name to its first owner, Francesc Burés, a textile entrepreneur. The ground floor housed the headquarters of his company, while the family lived on the main floor. The rest of the building was designated for rental apartments. The design was commissioned to Francesc Berenguer i Mestres, a close collaborator of Antoni Gaudí.

Modernist façade of Casa Burés

With over 7,000 m², six floors, twelve apartments, and one of the first elevators in Barcelona, Casa Burés was one of the most ambitious architectural projects of its time. Its modernist style integrates neo-Gothic and Germanic influences, visible in its imposing façade of natural stone, ornamental balconies, wrought iron railings, and sculpted decorative elements.

The interior is even more fascinating. The entrance hall, with capitals and animal representations, is crowned by a unique sculpture of a bear embracing a brass lamp. A skylight and a multicolored stained glass window complete this space, where glass, stone, iron, and mosaic blend in visual harmony.

The main floor - the original residence of the Burés family - preserves unique original elements: mosaic floors and marquetry designed by Pau Roig and Gaspar Homar, sculptural panels representing sports practiced by the bourgeoisie (by Joan Carreras), and ceilings with floral plaster moldings.

Today, while many modernist buildings have been transformed into museums, hotels, or institutional headquarters, Casa Burés remains a residential property and opens its doors to the public. Since 1979, it has been classified as a cultural asset of local interest with level B protection. Its preservation represents a commitment to the city's heritage.

The rehabilitation project, led by architect Juan Trias de Bes and the interior design studio Vilablanch, specialists in restoring homes with high heritage value, has recovered the maximum number of original elements and integrated comfort and contemporary design.

Thanks to this effort, the project has been internationally recognized and a finalist in competitions such as the World Interiors News Awards in London. Today, Casa Burés allows you to acquire unique homes in the heart of the Catalan city - a very rare opportunity.

The building features exclusive communal areas: indoor heated pool, gym, cellar, kitchen and event lounge with private dining room, coworking spaces, laundry room, and individual storage. The rooftop has been transformed into a chill-out area with an outdoor pool, relaxation areas, and views of the Barcelona Eixample.
