On the first floor of the ‘Bagués Hotel’ in Barcelona, we can find the most important exhibition of modernist jewellery of the city. Here we can find a lot of decorative pieces from the modernist period that had been displayed in some of the most important museums of the world, such as the
Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid, or the MNAC.
The exhibition of the ‘Bagués Hotel’ in Barcelona can be a trip around the exotic elements and tastes that fascinated some of the artists of the time.
Dragonflies, flowers, nymphs and butterflies were turned into sophisticated jewellery ─ necklaces, earrings, bracelets and brooches. With the
plique-à-jour or ‘
finestrat’ technique we can see the light coming through the transparent enamel due to the colour treatment and the
exquisite taste.
In this exhibition, we can find as well some watercolours and drawings made with Chinese ink that the artist showed to his clients to show them how the jewels evolved. Some domestic objects that help us understand the time in which these pieces of jewellery were created can be found on this exhibition too.
The exhibit in the ‘Bagués Hotel’ is focused in the production of Lluís Masriera, a very important jeweller in the Catalan ‘Art Decó’ era. It can also be observed how in this moment the union between art and the start of the industrial projection emerged, as Masriera created many
unique pieces, but also serial jewels created through dies and moulds.
This tribute to modernist jewellery is located in the old jewellery-study of the ‘
Bagués-Masriera’ jewellers. A unique place that shows us this kind of jewellery in its authentic historic context.
