La Festa Major de Gràcia

This August Barcelona celebrates the 200th anniversary of ‘fiestas del barrio de Gràcia’ which invites locals as well as tourists to enjoy their decorated streets, activities, concerts and the festive atmosphere, are you going to miss this event? Although it is likely that these celebrations were held before 1817, there is no record of it until that year, so 1817 was chosen as the year when the famous festival in the neighbourhood of Gràcia started. From the 15^th to the 21^st of August, some of the streets in the area transform completely thanks to the associations of neighbours which decorate them, turning the streets into works of art. Each street choses a theme, and all the neighbours who want to take part, spend weeks, and even months, preparing everything to turn their street into a world of fantasy which mesmerizes visitors. It is worth mentioning that part of the decorative elements on the streets are made by using recycled materials – such as carboards or plastic bottles. To make it all a bit more interesting, every decorated street ''fights'' to win the prize for the best decorated street. All the visitors can vote, even through the ‘fiestas de Gràcia’ official APP. Besides the original decorations, ‘fiestas de Gràcia’ offers as well live music, ‘castellers’, ‘correfocs’, ‘pasacalles’ and several activities that anyone can enjoy.
