If you have ever been to
Barcelona, you probably have heard the word
trencadís, do you know what this word means? Today,
Atipika Barcelona will explain it to you.
Trencadís is a kind of
mosaic made with irregular ceramic pieces, although glass or marble pieces may be used as well, usually with an abstract design – even though more realistic figures can be created – which are very typical in modernist architecture.
One of the architects who made this technique famous, especially in Barcelona, was
Antoni Gaudí, who used these irregular pieces to decorate some of the most iconic façades of the city. He also used defective and broken parts of plates and cups coming from several factories in Spain to decorate elements.
This technique uses pieces of ceramic or other materials of the same tonality, or a similar one ,to create harmonic
designs, although whole pieces with a design can be broken into pieces that afterwards are merged to create a beautifully abstract design.
As clear examples in Barcelona where this technique was used we find
Casa Batllò’s façade, several figures on
Casa Milà’s rooftop, and parts of
La Sagrada Familia and
Parc Güell.
