‘Picasso romántico’ (Romanesque Picasso), has been organized by the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and the Musée National Picasso-París, and it brings 40 oil paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures and a relief painting, that the Málaga painter created, to Barcelona. Pablo Picasso’s creations have a great Romanesque influence and the ‘dialogue’ with the medieval works of the MNAC collection allows us to understand this connection.
The exhibition can be visited in the MNAC Romanesque permanent exposition room until February 26th 2017. Atipika Barcelona encourages you to visit this great selection of documents that belong to the Parisian museum – these reveal his passion for the art of this period.
‘Picasso románico’ revolves around three thematic axes. The first one explores the most initial contact with Romanesque art - we are talking about works with a certain primitive touch which Picasso described as “sentimental”.
The second one is based on the crucifixion tragedy. Picasso deals with this topic, very common in Romanticism, at different stages in his life, specially between 1930 and 1937. MNAC recommends that we connect this stage with the sculptural work ‘descendimientos’ that can also be visited in their facilities.
The third axis is based on one the of the images that is more present and common in the Romanesque collection in the museum – the skull. Death is one of the great transversal topics in Picasso’s work and he expresses it symbolically in different ways, specially through masks and skulls.
