Xavier Corberó – The house as a poem

15-12-2016 Lifestyle

The house of Catalan sculptor Xavier Corberó i Olivella is an architectural labyrinth, a sort of inhabitable poem or a mental structure in constant evolution since 1968.

Located on grounds in Esplugues de Llobregat, this hypnotic construction of over 4,500 m² is composed of nine interconnected buildings through a dozen interior courtyards.

The property features over 300 arches, glass and wooden doors, living rooms, bedrooms, sculptural gardens, an underground studio, art galleries, and a complex network of spaces designed for creation and contemplation. Here, his own monumental works in marble and basalt are exhibited.

Xavier Corberó's house was not conceived as a mere residence. Here, the interiors are built with a symbolic intention and a universal meaning. "I like it to seem like things have always been here," he declared in an interview for The Wall Street Journal, illustrated by Catalan photographer Salva López.

Xavier Corberó – The house as a poem

"What interests me is that the result is poetry"

His home is absolutely personal and unique. At 81 years old, Xavier Corberó continues to shape what he sees in his imagination. Recently, he invited director Albert Moya to explore his creative universe from inside this post-industrial house: "What interests me is that the result is poetry, because I think it is the mother of everything.

For me, a house is like an agenda; here, each object has a personal story. I bought the last beautiful piece of street left in Esplugues and thought that if I covered the ugly, it could turn out beautiful. Since 1968, I have been building and building. Everything I have done is here," confessed Corberó.

The real space merges with the mental space. From a single point, a large part of the house can be observed, generating a sense of visual and conceptual continuity. The rooms cease to have a utilitarian function to become unique atmospheres.

One of the courtyards, with octagonal windows, functions as a kaleidoscope projecting changing reflections on the walls. In the artist's words, captured in Moya's documentary: "When something is well-scaled, the music sounds good. What I try to do doesn't come from reason, it comes from life. Reason serves me to build and sustain everything; the rest are aesthetic, ethical, and divine motivations. I try to accomplish what I have imagined, what I have never done, and what I would like to see."

Brightness and a taste for white spaces are also two essential characteristics of these exclusive homes from Atipika Barcelona, which we propose to you today. If you are interested in learning more, we will be happy to assist you.
